Evangel - Evangelize - Evangelist - Evangelistic - Evangelism

Evangel simply means 'good news' and is often used as a synonym for the gospel. It is simply an Anglicized form of the Greek word found in the Gospels, evangellion to refer to the "good news" of the Kingdom of God that Jesus preached (e.g., Matt 4:23; 9:35; Mk 1:14; Lk 1:19).

Evangelize is a verb describing the act of preaching the gospel while the noun evanglist refers to any person who preaches "the good news" of the Gospel, and is sometimes used to refer to the authors of any of the four Gospels. Evangelistic is the adjective describing all that is related to the preaching of the gospel (e.g., an 'evangelistic' meeting is one aimed at preaching the gospel). Evangelism is the noun describing both the act of reaching out with the gospel so that men and women may come to know Christ as well as the craft—approach, methods, motivation—for doing so.

The adjective 'evangelistic,' though a thoroughly Christian term, has also entered into common English usage to mean any activity, especially enthusiastic ones, whose aim is to persuade others to one's cause or world-view.
