By definition all Christians live by faith, i.e., trusting in God not just for our redemption, but also for all our needs. Jesus commands his followers not to be like the pagan babblers in prayer "for your Father knows what you need before you ask him" (Matt 6:8). The expression "living by faith," however, has attained a meaning of its own in modern Christian circles to mean a way of serving God without pay but trusting God to provide for one's entire needs—for the ministry as well as personal needs—simply in response to prayers. This is exemplified most clearly in the principle that "God's work done in God's way will never lack for funds" espoused by James Hudson Taylor, founder of the China Inland Mission.
