Jahaz

A city in Transjordan that belonged to Sihon, king of the Amorites, and where the battle with Israel was joined in Israel's earliest wars of conquest. It was an important town that marked the extent of Moabite territory at one time or anohter. It was captured and allotted to the tribe of Reuben and made a levitical city. The Mesha Inscription refers to Jahaz as the site where "Mesha, son of Chemosh, king of Moab" attempted to wrestle the region back from Israelite rule, possibly in the reign of Joram, son of Ahad.
