Sihon

King of the Amorites, who ruled the Transjordan lands from the Arnon river to the Jabbok, with his capital in the city of Heshbon (Num 21:24-26).

Israel encountered Sihon during their journey through the Transjordan and asked him for the privilege of safe passage through his land on their way to Canaan (Num 21:21). He refused and mustered his army against the Israelites. He was defeated and his land, and those of Og, King of Bashan, were subsequently divided up and allotted to the tribes of Gad, Reuben, and half of Manasseh. The defeat of Sihon and Og were often recalled in later Israel as one of God's mighty acts on behalf of Israel (Neh 9:22; Psm 135:10-12; 136:19-20).
