King of Bashan, who was one of the last of the Rephaites and who reigned from his capital in Ashtaroth.
Little is known about him. The books of Numbers and Deuteronomy reports that Og came out to fight against the Israelites at Edrei soon after Israel's victory over Sihon and his Amorite army (Num 21:33; Deut 3:1ff). He was defeated and his land, which stretched from the Jabbok river in the south to the Hermon mountains in the north, was given to the half of Manasseh as their inheritance (Deut 3:13). Og must have been an exceptionally tall person, and wealthy, for he had an iron bed "nine cubits long and four cubits wide" (4m by 1.2m), at a time when iron was the latest in technological innovations (Deut 3:11). The bed could still be seen in Rabbah of the Ammonites (modern Amman) many years later. Spectacular though the bed may have been, it remained an empty bed; even giants, for those who would walk in faith with God, fall.
